Satirical cartoon illustrating the fake travel booking sites scam: an oblivious user presses enter and their money is stolen by a computer hacker.

The check-in nightmare: you booked, but the hotel doesn't know. Discover how the Booking.com clone site scam works and how to protect your money.

"Vignetta satirica che illustra la truffa dei finti siti di prenotazione viaggi, con un utente ignaro e i soldi rubati da un hacker."

🚨 The illusion of savings: while you dream of your vacation pressing "Enter", scammers empty your card thanks to clone sites perfectly identical to the originals.

"Nano Banana in versione investigatore controlla l'URL del sito web con una lente d'ingrandimento per garantire un pagamento online sicuro con carta di credito."

🔍 The golden rule before paying: do like our Nano Banana and use a virtual "magnifying glass" to check that the web address is the official one!

Just the day before yesterday, a dear friend of mine arrived at the reception of a hotel, exhausted from her journey but excited to start her vacation. She presented her documents and booking confirmation. The hotelier's reply froze her: "I'm sorry madam, we have no reservation under your name."

What had happened? She had fallen victim to the latest, highly sophisticated fake Booking.com sites scam. She had booked and paid on a "clone site," a perfect photocopy of the original, handing her money straight to scammers.

Here at Villa Malvasio, we care about our guests' peace of mind even before they walk through our gates. That's why we've analyzed this scam to explain how it works and, most importantly, how to defend yourself.

1. How scammers operate (The Modus Operandi) 🥷

Forget about old, poorly written emails. Today's scammers are professionals (using Phishing and Social Engineering techniques). Here is how they contact their victims:

  • Hacking Hotels: Criminals manage to steal the login credentials of hotels. This way, they write to you directly on the official Booking app chat, making the message look incredibly safe!
  • WhatsApp and fake SMS: They contact you pretending to be customer support or the property itself.
  • Creating Urgency (Panic): The typical message reads: "Dear customer, there was a verification error on your credit card. Click on this link within 12 hours to confirm the payment, or your reservation will be canceled."
  • The Clone Site: By clicking the link, a page completely identical to Booking.com opens (displaying your real reservation data, stolen from the hacked system). You enter your card details, and your money vanishes.

2. How to notice it: Guidelines to avoid getting scammed 🕵️‍♂️

Victims usually realize the theft in only two ways: noticing immediate unauthorized charges on their card, or (the worst-case scenario) arriving at the property and finding they have no room. To prevent this from happening, always follow these 3 Golden Rules:

  • Rule A: Check the email address (The domain test) Don't just look at the "name" displayed in your inbox; expand the sender's email address. Official communications come ONLY from proprietary domains: @booking.com, @airbnb.com, @expedia.com. If you read addresses like giovanni.spanu@gmail.com, booking-support@hotmail.com, or similar, trash them immediately.
  • Rule B: The personal greeting Official platforms know your identity. A real email will always state your First and Last Name (e.g., "Dear Mario Rossi"). Scammers, operating with massive automated systems, use generic formulas like "Dear Guest" or, worse, paste your entire email address (e.g., "Dear mario.rossi@gmail.com"). This is an absolute red flag.
  • Rule C: The Link in the address bar If you are asked to click a link, always check the top bar in your browser. The address must be https://www.booking.com/.... Scam sites have disguised domains (e.g., booking-reservation-secure.com or booking.id-verifica.com).

🤝 Direct Booking: How Villa Malvasio protects you

The safest way ever to book your vacation and avoid third-party computer intrusions is to contact the property directly. To guarantee you maximum transparency and IT security, we at Villa Malvasio have adopted bulletproof protocols:

  1. Official Communications: We will never write to you from generic addresses. All our communications are sent exclusively from our secure, proprietary email: info@villamalvasio.com.
  2. Certified Payments: We will never ask you to enter card details on suspicious links. We exclusively accept two payment methods: Bank Transfer (traceable and secure) or the international STRIPE gateway. Thanks to STRIPE, you can pay with total peace of mind using your Credit Card or via PayPal, which offers Buyer Protection to dispute any anomalies.

By choosing our official website, not only will you avoid any risk of phishing, but you will also be guaranteed the best available rate.

👉 Book in total safety on the official Villa Malvasio website and sleep soundly, before and during your vacation.
