Our explorer Nano Banana immerses himself in the festive atmosphere of Porto Torres. Like a true local tourist, he admiringly watches the evocative procession of the Holy Martyrs parading in front of the majestic Romanesque facade of the Basilica of San Gavino during the Festha Manna.

The Origins of the Festha Manna and the Three Turritan Martyrs

Every year, during the Pentecost period, the city of Porto Torres comes alive to celebrate its most heartfelt and spectacular anniversary: the Festha Manna. This extraordinary event has its roots in ancient Rome and commemorates the sacrifice of the three Turritan martyrs: San Gavino, Proto and Gianuario. Historical tradition tells that at the beginning of the fourth century, the Christian preachers Proto and Gianuario were imprisoned due to the persecutions of Emperor Diocletian. The Roman soldier assigned to guard them, Gavino, was deeply struck by their unwavering faith, deciding to convert to Christianity and free them. This gesture of immense piety cost him the death penalty by decapitation. A few days later, Proto and Gianuario also suffered martyrdom on the evocative cliff of Balai Lontano.

The Rite: From the Basilica of San Gavino to the Balai Church

The remains of the three saints were initially buried in a rocky hypogeum, and then translated, centuries later, into the majestic Basilica of San Gavino, an architectural masterpiece and the largest Romanesque church in Sardinia. Even today, the festival revolves around these sacred places. One of the most touching moments of the entire manifestation is the rite of translation: the wooden simulacra of the saints are accompanied in procession from the Basilica to the picturesque little church of Balai Vicino, overlooking the sea. Equally fascinating is the night pilgrimage: thousands of faithful leave on foot from Sassari in the middle of the night to reach Porto Torres at the first light of dawn, in an act of devotion and profound popular identity.

Living the Festival as an Insider: Street Food and Traditions in Northern Sardinia

Beyond the deep spiritual meaning, the Festha Manna is a triumph of social aggregation and culinary joy. The seafront and the streets of the center are transformed into an immense open air stage where you can experience authentic Sardinian street food. As true local insiders, we suggest you do not miss the sensory experience walking among the countless stalls: the scent of roasted suckling pig (the classic Sardinian porceddu) and the inevitable sandwich with octopus freshly caught and roasted on the grills, represent a gastronomic rite that is literally impossible to give up. Amidst traditional music concerts and historical re enactments, you will savor the true festive essence of the island.
