There is a place in Sardinia where time has stopped. An island of 50 sq km where nature reclaimed its space thanks to human isolation. Welcome to Asinara National Park. Unlike our previous article on general activities, this is a deep dive into the "Italian Alcatraz." Staying at Villa Malvasio, you are strategically located near Porto Torres, the main harbor for the ferry.
1. The Two Faces of the Island
West Coast: Dramatic cliffs dropping into the deep sea, protecting Sardinia from the Mistral wind.
East Coast: Calm, turquoise waters. Here you find Cala Sabina (perfect for swimming) and the protected Cala d'Arena (visual access only).
2. A History of Maximum Security For a century, Asinara was a "Devil's Island." First a quarantine station, then a Max-Security Prison housing mafia bosses like Totò Riina.
Historical Highlight: You must see the "Red House," where anti-mafia magistrates Falcone and Borsellino lived in isolation in 1985 to write the historic Maxi-Trial against the Mafia.
3. The White Donkey The island's symbol is the unique Albino Donkey. They roam free everywhere. They are wild animals, so please observe them from a distance!
How to visit: Private cars are banned. You must take the ferry from Porto Torres (Delcomar) and then explore by Jeep Tour, Tourist Train, or Rental E-Bike.
Why stay at Villa Malvasio? The ferry leaves Porto Torres at 08:30 AM. We are the perfect base to catch it without stress.
- Secure Parking: Leave your car and luggage safely with us while you explore the island.
